I Made a Wabi-Sabi Style Vase from Discarded Bottles

Wabi-sabi, a core element of Japanese aesthetics, finds beauty in simplicity, imperfection, and naturalness. It celebrates the unadorned and unassuming, rejecting extravagance and showiness. It encourages us to appreciate the intrinsic charm and strength that lies within objects and highlights the profound beauty that emerges from quiet contemplation.

Wabi-sabi may appear weathered and worn, but it represents the pinnacle of aesthetic sophistication. The eight core design techniques of wabi-sabi provide insight into its distinctive style:

  • Embracing Original Texture
  • Unconstrained and Relaxed Layouts
  • Curves and Surfaces with Natural Irregularities
  • Rustic and Muted Color Palettes
  • Respect for Negative Space
  • Natural and Singular Soft Furnishings
  • Warm and Inviting Lighting
  • Wabi-sabi and Eastern Zen Philosophy

Today, we will show you how to create your very own Wabi-sabi vase using discarded bottles. Follow us on Instagram (ID: BetterBasicsHome ) to discover more about crafting your own serene Wabi-sabi environment through vases and other objects.

Create Your Own Wabi-Sabi Vase: 3 Easy DIY Steps Using Discarded Bottles

Step 1

Collect discarded bottles of different sizes and shapes, and clean them thoroughly.

Step 2

Apply a layer of soft black or gray clay onto the bottle. Using soft clay makes it easier for beginners to shape the vase. The clay I purchased on Amazon cost around $14, but you can also use materials that you're familiar with.

Step 3

After applying the base layer of clay, add a generous amount of soft clay to the surface, ensuring its thickness. Remember, a substantial layer of clay is essential, as a thin layer may hinder shaping during later stages.

As demonstrated in the video, use your nimble fingers to delicately massage and sculpt the surface of the clay into the desired shape of your vase. Embrace the pliability of the clay and allow your artistic instincts to guide your fingers towards a visually pleasing aesthetic.

At this point, Your Wabi-Sabi Creation is Almost Complete.
Patience is Key - Allow 24-48 Hours of Drying Time Before Filling Your Vase with Water.

Before beginning to make the candle holder, it is important to first ensure that the bottle cap can be laid flat and that there is no need to remove the straw from the bottle itself. By keeping the straw intact, it is more convenient and stable for us to work with.

Next, we can begin to use the color-mixing method to knead the clay to match the color scheme that suits our personal tastes. For instance, red + white can create a lovely pink hue, while black + white results in a sophisticated gray.

After this step, we can then wrap garden fixing wire around the bottle cap or use any spare wire we have around the house.

Once we have our wire, we can use it to create whatever shape we desire. The wire can be curved or straight, or any shape that we dare to imagine.

With our wire shape created, we can now pick our base color clay and use it to wrap around the water bottle lid and the wire shape we have made. It is important to ensure that our clay is wrapped securely around the wire shape to ensure stability. This will allow our candle holder to remain standing once we add our candles.

At this point, we can use our imagination to add additional details to our candle holder. Some may prefer an irregular design, while others may favor wave point art.

Whatever our personal style, we can add our chosen elements to our candle holder at will.

In conclusion, making a candle holder out of clay is an opportunity to showcase our creativity and design skills. By using simple materials such as wire and clay, we can create a beautiful and unique addition to our home decor. So let your imagination run wild and create a one-of-a-kind candle holder that reflects your personal style and artistic vision.
